Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not seek re-election in 2027—provided he is, in Baba-Ahmed’s words, a “smart politician.”
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s political program Prime Time on Friday, Baba-Ahmed argued that the writing is on the wall for both Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I expect Tinubu to throw in the towel if he is that smart politician that he turns out to be,” Baba-Ahmed stated, adding that the chances of victory for the APC in the next election are slim.
He went further to criticize Tinubu’s long-standing involvement in presidential politics, claiming that Tinubu has played a behind-the-scenes role in the emergence of multiple presidential candidates over the years.
“He skipped 2007 and jokingly made Atiku the candidate, made Ribadu and someone else in 2011, made Buhari in 2015—Buhari won—then skipped 2019, and they stole 2023,” Baba-Ahmed said.
According to him, all signs point to a loss for Tinubu in 2027 if he chooses to contest again.
“If he is that smart, everything is there for him that he’s going to lose 2027,” he concluded.
