Local Governments in Delta State are gravely understaffed, especially at the lower cadre of the career ladder.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of Udu Local Government, Vincent Oyibode, at this year’s annual Maris public service lecture series of the Maris Trust Council held on Wednesday at Government House,Asaba.
He said that the situation was gravely affecting the local governments which require the vital services of low cadre workers.
The Chairman added that the challenge had been compounded by the fact that the recruitment regulation made the process of engaging workers was quite cumbersome.
According to him, local governments do not directly recruit staff but must go through the Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, which must first obtain the approval of the state government.
Oyibode added that, in order to find a secondary solution to the situation, some local governments have had to engage some suitable youths in committees.
On the performance of the local governments in the state, he said that there was an unspoken but evident healthy competition among the current crop of chairmen regarding who would top the performance chart.
