Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has been appointed chair of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zoning committee, ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025 in Kano.
The PDP Governors’ Forum after a meeting in Ibadan on Monday, also named Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal as vice chairman and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang as secretary of the zoning committee.
In addition, the forum recommended the formation of a National Convention Committee to be led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), with Governor Ademola Adeleke (Osun) as vice chairman and Governor Peter Mbah (Enugu) as secretary. These nominations await ratification by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC).
Reading the communique, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed announced:
- The PDP will not enter any political merger or coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, though it remains open to welcoming new members or groups.
- The forum backs plans to approach the Supreme Court for clarity on the declaration of a state of emergency in any state, particularly in support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers State).
- The PDP reiterates its support for the South East to produce the next National Secretary, recommending the current deputy to act in the interim.
- The forum raised alarm over worsening insecurity in states like Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo, urging for a revised, bottom-up security strategy.
The forum condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and expressed condolences to the victims.
Attendees included governors and deputies from Oyo, Osun, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Zamfara, Taraba, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states.
