In a deft move to enhance security in schools in the State, the Delta State Command today inaugurated a security squad for academic institutions in the state.
The squad is the response of the command to the novel initiative being championed by the brass of the Nigerian Police Force, under the watch of its Inspector -General, Kayode Egbetokun, who was represented at the event by Salman Dogo, Assistant Inspector -General for Zone 5.
The event held during a forum of stakeholders at Old Government House, Asaba.
The Inspector-General, who presided over the meeting through his representative, AIG Dogo, said the initiative captured his commitment to the overall security of Nigerians as well as others living in the country, especially schools and students.
According to him, the initiative is a strategic way of taking the course of responsorial actions from the reactionary to the proactive/prevention option.
He said that the move was an effort to ensure that enduring security graduates from a privilege to a right.
At the event, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who opened the forum, thumbed up the move and pledged active support for it.
He lauded the State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, for his potent crime fight,and stressed the necessity for effective liaison and partnership among the various security agencies.
Stakeholders, including those from security establishments, the education sector, the civil society and the mass media were in attendance.
The School squad comprises well trained and equipped officers who would also act as mentors to pupils and students, aside from their role as guardians.
