University of Ibadan has expressed concerns over the rising number of female students taking to egg donation as a means of income, according to report by THE PUNCH.
In a memo dated April 15, 2025, and obtained by THE PUNCH Online on Friday, the University Health Service cautioned students against viewing egg donation as a sustainable financial venture.
While acknowledging that the procedure offers hope to families dealing with infertility, the university warned that it carrieD significant health risks and should not be treated as a casual or recurring side hustle.
The memo, signed by Dr. Aderonke Ajayi, Director of the University Health Service, highlighted the increasing involvement of female students in egg donation through individuals, agents, or agencies.
Dr. Ajayi explained that egg donation involved administering hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries—a process associated with several short-term risks, including abdominal pain, bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, and Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
In more severe cases, it may lead to infections, internal bleeding, ovarian torsion, injury to organs such as the bladder and bowel, and psychological distress.
She further noted concerns about potential long-term complications, including the risk of reduced fertility.
Research on the long-term effects of egg donation remains inconclusive, particularly regarding how many times a person can safely undergo the procedure.
Dr. Ajayi recommended that egg donation not be performed more than three times a year and urged students to seek out reputable clinics that adhered to established medical guidelines and prioritised donor safety.
“It is important that our students understand the health implications and long-term consequences of egg donation,” the memo said.
It said:,“We advise everyone to act with caution and prioritise their health over financial incentives.”
The university also called on its community members to spread awareness and help protect young women from misinformation and exploitation related to egg donation.
