Tension is rising in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State following the killing and poisoning of dozens of cows, days after Governor Caleb Mutfwang banned night grazing in the state in response to recent violence.
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has confirmed that 36 cows were killed and another 42 poisoned in the Tafi Gana junction area on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
According to MACBAN’s Chairman in Bassa LGA, Ya’u Idris, the cows were grazing in the area when unknown individuals allegedly scattered poisoned garden eggs across the field.
“We had about 78 cattle grazing in the area. As of now, 36 have died, while the remaining 42 are in critical condition. Their fate is uncertain,” Idris said.
He urged members of the Fulani community to remain calm and not resort to violence. “We’ve informed the GOC of the 3 Division, who visited the scene and assured us that the incident will be investigated and those responsible brought to justice,” Idris added.
The incident has heightened tensions in the region, already fraught with insecurity and recent clashes between herders and farmers.
