Former Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Mike Omeri, has called for an immediate end to the rising wave of violence and insecurity across Nigeria, particularly in Plateau, Benue, and other northern states. He described the killings as “senseless” and a crime against both God and humanity, urging perpetrators to reflect on their actions.
Omeri emphasized that the federal government has a critical role to play and called for the urgent deployment of additional resources to security agencies. He warned that failure to act decisively could result in regions like Plateau falling completely into the hands of terrorists and criminal gangs.
He stressed that security should never be politicized, urging political leaders to rise above party lines and treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves. “Security is a national concern, not a political contest,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, the former Special Adviser to ex-Senate President David Mark also called for a swift and unified approach to tackle the ongoing security crisis.
Omeri urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt new strategies, strengthen community-based security structures, and prioritize the recruitment, training and equipping of security personnel. He warned that unless swift and sincere action is taken, ungoverned spaces in the North Central, North West, North East, and South East could spiral further out of control.
“The situation is deteriorating daily. We must collectively raise our voices and take action, drawing on everyone’s strengths to restore peace,” Omeri said. He praised the efforts of State governors and acknowledged the bravery of the military, police, and other security forces despite limited resources.
He concluded by calling for greater investment in intelligence, equipment, and inter-agency collaboration. “There should be no rivalry in fighting insecurity, only partnerships,” he asserted.
