In a major political shake-up, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo declared that Edo and Delta States will be the vanguard for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. This announcement came during a massive rally in Delta State where top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chairman Chiedu Ebie, formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a significant realignment in South-South politics.
Governor Okpebholo, flanked by APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and other party leaders, described the event as a “historic shift,” noting the momentum started in Edo is now sweeping through Delta. He praised Ebie’s leadership and emphasized the South-South’s readiness to embrace APC-style of governance.
Dr. Ganduje highlighted that the APC now holds over 60% of PDP’s former support base in Delta, having gained multiple Senators, House of Representatives members, and state lawmakers. He stressed the need for unity to secure victory in 2027.
Ebie stated that the defection was motivated by President Tinubu’s inclusive leadership and a shared vision for progress in the region.
The day also saw party leaders pay homage to the Dein of Agbor, who urged prioritization of peace and development. Among the high-profile attendees were Senator Ned Nwoko, Hon. Teke Ibori-Swenu, and former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.
This political wave in Delta mirrors similar developments in Edo and is being dubbed the APC’s “Southern Strategy” — a calculated push to reshape the region’s political future ahead of 2027..
