The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning for hazardous weather conditions from Wednesday, April 9 to Friday, April 11, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across six states: Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ogun. The downpours may lead to flash floods, strong winds, and disruptions, especially in flood-prone areas.
In addition to the primary six states, lighter rainfall is expected in Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, and Delta. NiMet advised the public to avoid driving on waterlogged roads, as strong undercurrents, slippery surfaces, and poor visibility could lead to accidents. Residents were also urged to unplug electrical appliances during storms to prevent power surges and electrocution.
The agency’s forecast highlights the need for improved infrastructure and disaster response systems, particularly in flood-prone regions. In Delta, heavy rainfall recently caused severe flooding on the Old Lagos-Agbor Road, trapping vehicles and motorcycles. While no casualties were reported, the state government is pushing for measures to mitigate future flooding risks.
